Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 cup fresh salsa (store-bought or homemade)
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
  • ¼ cup red onion finely diced
  • 1 jalapeño pepper seeded and minced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2-3 tbsp water (for desired consistency)

Instructions

Prep Ingredients

  • Dice the red onion finely. Mince the jalapeño pepper, removing seeds and membranes for less heat. Chop the cilantro, including some tender stems. Mince the garlic cloves.

Prepare Avocados

  • Cut avocados in half lengthwise, working around the pit. Twist to separate the halves. Remove the pit by gently tapping your knife into it and twisting. Scoop the flesh into a medium-sized bowl using a spoon.

Create the Base

  • Add the salsa to the bowl with the avocados. Pour in the fresh lime juice immediately to prevent browning. Add the minced garlic, cumin, salt, and pepper. Using a fork or potato masher, mash everything together until creamy with some small chunks remaining, about 30-45 seconds.

Add Fresh Elements

  • Fold in the diced onion, minced jalapeño (if using), and chopped cilantro. Mix everything together gently with a spoon or spatula until well combined.
